Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell, Ph.D., Burton and Deedee McMurtry Curator and Director of the Curatorial Fellowship Program, Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University:
During the 18th century, the act of closely examining a work of art became intimately associated with the connoisseur’s pursuits. Like the “Nimeny-pimmeney” character in the James Gillray print included in this gallery, this collector uses a looking glass to scrutinize a drawing. He may be assessing the quality and condition of the paper, or studying the drawn marks in order to judge its attribution.
