This composition emphasizes the importance of working from a live model, while also idealizing the professional image of the artist. The setting is a studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, which had been founded in 1692. Academicians draw or paint from a nude model, while they are dressed stylishly but impractically in wigs and formal clothing. The social hierarchy of the group is evident in that the revered draftsman and engraver, Jakob Matthias Schmutzer, occupies a place of prestige in the center foreground. He is seated below the model’s right foot and faces the viewer. Schmutzer points with his left hand toward painter Martin Ferdinand Quadal, who originated this image.
