Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander, PhD, Assistant Curator of American Art, Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University:
George Herms created For McClure: Irish in Kansas as an homage to Beat poet and friend Michael McClure. Herms was a member of the San Francisco Beat Movement and had ties to McClure, Bruce Conner, and Wallace Berman, as well as artist Edward Kienholz, during his time in Los Angeles. Known for his sculptural assemblages, Herms created this work by collaging a number of found objects— such as flyers, photographs, a rusted cog, and strips of clothing—onto a wooden board. Taking cues from poets like McClure, Herms’s artistic developments in assemblage parallel his interest in poetic form, in which carefully composed, remote objects come together to take on new meanings.
