Rembrandt depicted the goldsmith, a laborer with social status similar to that of a printmaker, with delicacy and respect. The goldsmith works on a sculpture, an allegorical representation of Charity. His downcast gaze echoes that of the sculpted woman and his hand rests gently on the back of the sculpture, just as the woman touches the back of the child standing in front of her.
