For the violin player in Hogarth’s print, the hectic world of goods and services is an assault on his senses. He clamps his hands over his ears to block out the symphony of urban noise erupting in the street below his window. At left, a ballad seller calls out to sell her prints and a wandering musician plays his horn. A boy beats a drum in front of a milkmaid carrying a pail to market, and a knife sharpener operates his grinding wheel.
