Thomas Rowlandson trained at the Royal Academy but earned his living as a printmaker known for racy satires and humorous caricatures. He made his own version of the Cryes of London in which he satirized urban life and modern tradesmen, such as this grotesque butcher working by the light of the candle on the brim of his hat.
