Unlike Joseph Wright of Derby, Carle Vernet did not employ the horse as a metaphor for the complex social and economic issues intrinsic to modernization. Instead, Vernet flourished as an observer of the interesting and appealing details of daily life and capitalized on his passion for horses my making scores of very popular paintings and prints made after them.
