Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell, Ph.D., Burton and Deedee McMurtry Curator and Director of the Curatorial Fellowship Program, Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University:
Many women became street sellers because it requited only walking, yelling, and carrying a basket of goods. Plus, they could bring their children. Marcellus Laroon based many of his prints, which he first published in 1687, on actual street vendors, or criers. The titles of the prints came from the songs vendors sang to generate business. The Cryes became incredibly popular because they represented the merchandise and colorful character types encountered in London.
