"From the artist to Mel Henderson; Mel Henderson to Joe Hawley; Joe Hawkey, Cloverdale, CA (consigned to Brian Gross Gallery by Henderson and Hawley).
Mel Henderson and Joe Hawley are friends, former colleagues from teaching at SFSU. Mel had acquired the work from Arneson in the 1960s, and when Joe Hawley moved to Cloverdale, he gave him the piece to hold on to. It resided thereafter in Joe's hillside, rustic studio/home for many years. When I found it, it was quite covered with cobwebs and it had more or less merged with nature and the environment.
I have been unable to reach Joe today to inform him of a pending museum sale. I want to confirm again that he will convey title on behalf of Mel and himself, which is how he consigned it. Otherwise, I will have to be in touch with Mel as well, and I will let you know if that is the case."
