Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell, Ph.D., Burton and Deedee McMurtry Curator and Director of the Curatorial Fellowship Program, Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University:
English connoisseurs of the 18th century often were privileged gentlemen who devoted themselves to the systematic study and appreciation of art. This powerful group of tastemakers preferred the Renaissance paintings and ancient Roman sculptures they saw while on the Grand Tour in Italy rather than contemporary English art. Their influence profoundly affected early art historical scholarship, the curriculum at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and the European art market.

These mezzotints are group portraits made after a pair of paintings by the Royal Academy’s first president, Sir Joshua Reynolds. He depicts the members of the Society of Dilettanti, which stared in the 1730s as a dining club and evolved into an exclusive circle of art connoisseurs. They drink wine while reveling in art’s intellectual and sensual pleasures at a location evocative of the architecture witnessed on the Grand Tour.
