Printmaking always has straddled the worlds of art and commerce. The sheet etched by Arnold de Jode is a dealer’s advertisement. It combines a charming etched vignette inspired by motifs from antiquity with a functional list of the prints on sale at Tooker’s London print shop. The image by Abraham Bosse illuminates the technical practice of the etcher, at left, and the engraver, at right, while showing shopper, a gentleman and two monks, browsing a display of their inventory.
