Roger Shimomura’s portrait of an imagined woman merges two divergent histories of Asian American life. An internment camp fringed in barbedwire looms in the background, while a topography of crimson represents the land. The woman seems to float on the surface of the painting, wearing sumptuous, late–Art Deco clothing. Shimomura’s painting suggests an alternative and perhaps fictional history of Asian American wealth circa 1935, in contrast to the scourge of Japanese internment in 1942. As a young boy, the artist and his family were forcibly relocated to the Minidoka Internment Camp in Hunt, Idaho. Informed by such experiences, Shimomura’s paintings often investigate the history of race relations in the United States.
