Turks introduced coffee to Austria in 1683, during the Siege of Vienna. The first Viennese coffeehouse opened in 1685, two years after the Turkish army’s departure. This delicate rendering of an 18th-century street vendor captures the details of this seller’s costume, such as his feathered hat and the bells on his coat, designed to attract customers.
