Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell, Ph.D., Burton and Deedee McMurtry Curator and Director of the Curatorial Fellowship Program, Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University:
In 1783, the American painter John Singleton Copley completed a 22-by-25-foot canvas commemorating a recent naval battle in which Britain defeated its longtime enemies, Spain and France. Copley’s painting so impressed King George III that the monarch had a temporary gallery built for it at Green Park in London. Bartolozzi capitalized on the popularity of the painting and its public exhibition. This drawing is the preparatory study for a small engraving announcing his intention to make and sell a large print after Copley’s painting.
