William Pether used mezzotint to its greatest effect, capturing the dramatic lights and darks of Joseph Wright of Derby’s now-lost painting of farriers crafting horseshoes in the ruins of an ancient abbey. This is one of many Wright of Derby images in which the horse and farrier represent the traditions lost while the Industrial Revolution transformed England. In the age of mechanization, the horse was less vital to the urban economy, as were the men apprenticed and trained to make horseshoes.
